sole design exploration *
a sole design study (wip), exploring Japanese construction worker’s shoe x salomon
adapted last
foot-shaped look but no split toe
inspired by jika-tabis
basic sole outline
cupped sole / wrapped look for added protection
tool: gravity sketch
compound type:
tpu
composite plate - fibreglass / aramid
protective insert / safety layer
lightweight but strong
mould type:
dual-density direct injection
midsole: softer, shock-absorbing density for comfort
outsole: harder, abrasion-resistant density for durability
excellent bond strength
no gaps for water or chemicals to penetrate
high durability
lightweight compared to other methods
lugs:
• bigger on perimeter
• good ground contact required for perimeter - only slight inclinations
• avoid horizontal flexlines - can cause weakness
• micro-cuts help liquid draining and flexibility
Perimeter lugs - 5-7mm apart
height 3.5 mm for outdoor use
Center area can be grouped by a lower base - radius at base for self cleaning
good ground contact at the centre of the forefoot and heel is requires to pass the SATRA test
top of the lugs to have no texture to help with grip
